Advising Guidelines
GENERAL REGISTRATION GUIDELINES (Advising has moved to the advising center, but people often ask my opinion so I’ve left up some advice I’ve given in the past). ALWAYS sign up for an advising time as soon as possible and be sure to sign up for classes the first minute registration is open. It can be a big help in being sure to get the classes you want. The University has moved to professional advisers so it is likely that I am not your adviser even if I have been in the past. I am, however, willing to give you advice regardless of who your adviser is so please feel free to contact me or just stop by to discuss your classes. If you have questions or concerns please stop by or send an email. If you want detailed advising I’ll continue to list some suggestions for advising and helpful hints that will make a visit with me be more productive. As I said, you’re welcome to just pop in, but if you do want to prepare you may want to review some of the notes below.
BE SURE TO BRING YOUR CHECKSHEETS or your Degreeworks.
Seniors and those with priority registration begin registration at 7:00 a.m. on the first registration day (GET UP EARLY! I can’t stress that enough. It’s the best way to guarantee getting the classes you want at the times you want them). Juniors begin registration on the next day, Sophomores the day after that and Freshmen the day after that. Register as soon as it is possible for you to do so.
1. Your advisor (listed in your degreeworks) will work with you to lift your hold and figure out the courses you need. If you need additional advice I know the requirements well and will be glad to offer my input.
2. You should be aware of what classes you haven’t taken, what courses are offered, and what you’re planning to take (and when). Keep in mind that I’m giving you my advice on your schedule to make sure you’re on target. I’m not creating a schedule for you. You should use Degree Works on MyCats before coming in. It’s a great way to get a good idea of what you still need to take.
3. Check your holds on-line to make sure you don’t owe for a parking ticket or something else that will keep you from being able to register.
4. Make an effort to spread out your highest impact classes so you aren’t taking ALL of the core marketing required courses the same term, or loading up on the tougher Quant courses all at once.
Come prepared to our meeting. Be prepared to discuss specific advising issues – which classes you still need, which ones you are planning on registering for, how things are going, etc.
You register for your classes during your registration period (it isn’t done for you based on your meeting with your advisor). Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. on the day of registration. To insure that you get the classes you want please try to get up early (or stay up late). If you are unfamiliar with the web registration system, please let me know and we will run through it!
If I can help please just let me know!
